Wind Turbine - Letting Wind Do the Work!

by @ 4:46 pm. category: Heating and Ventilation

I’m not a meteorologist but I think April is the hottest month of summer. But, we can still call ourselves lucky compared to those living in the desert and the Middle East - where the sun shines at 7am like its noon and at 2pm like its your inside an oven. :-|

Did you ever notice that it is sometimes hotter inside your house than it is outside? I recently got a call to check on a friend’s home, and that was her question. Basically, I told her like many homes she has an overheated roof space acting like a giant radiator. This heat radiates downwards causing discomfoft in living areas. If left untreated, roof space temperatures can reach as high as 60°c!

The solution was to increase roof space ventilation to reduce heat buildup and moisture. Insulation will be rendered ineffective because of the additional heat load due to poor ventilation. The answer to her problems was installing a wind turbine ventilator. It’s ugly and it’s big! (12″ to 14″ in diameter) but they do work. It’s main advantage is that they don’t need electrical power and, in their own way, they work very efficiently. The slightest air movement sets the turbine spinning, and the faster it spins, the more hot, humid air it evacuates.

These ventilators work two ways: Reduce heat druring summer and reduce moisture during non-summer months. The illustration above shows how they work.
